leaving a trace

During a recent visit to the very interesting Architecture of Necessity exhibit at the Virserum Museum in Smaland, Sweden, I was moved by this sculptural piece by AIX Architects. The installation is comprised of a series of pieces of plywood that have been laser cut. The outer portion is a very crisp, hard plane, while the interior has an amazingly organic, soft feel where the light and shadows seem to create spaces and forms much like natural canyon slots. The AIX Architects say:

“The installation tells us about the human footprint, that to walk on Earth beams to leave a trace. The stack of wooden boards can be seen as the image of a given amount of natural resources. Humans pass and make use of or consume resources. Architecture and construction is dependent on relating to these fundamental and critical questions and insights.”

The result is absolutely beautiful which has certainly left a trace in my visual memory.

Is there a “Do Not Touch” sign in front of the AIX Architects piece? I’d be tempted to walk through with palms floating outward.

    Thanks for sharing.

Wow. I can only imagine what it must have felt like going through it. Its beautiful on its own and certainly a creative way of trying to make sense of…and illustrating the human footprint. Its so important we tread lightly.
