When considering what is the most eco-friendly way to wash your car – at the car wash or in your driveway – most people don’t realize that washing a car in ones driveway can be one of the most environmentally unfriendly things we can do. Unlike household waste water that enters sewers or septic systems and undergoes treatment before is enters the environment, what comes from our car goes right into the storm drains and into rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands where it can poison aquatic life and wreak ecosystem havoc. The water from the car can be loaded with oil, gasoline and residue from exhaust fumes and the detergents used for the washing.
On the other hand, commercial car wash facilities are legally required to drain their waste water into the sewer systems and also use computer controlled systems and high-pressure nozzles and pumps that minimize water usage. Many also recycle and re-use the rinse water.
Plus, car washes are a visual playground. Since childhood I find myself captivated and mesmerized with the patterns and compositions that occur on the windshield of the car in the wash and I took these photos from the inside of the car with my iphone. Ah, the beauty of the car wash…
